Dr. Sumin Kim is an Associate Professor in Department of Architecture & Architectural Engineering, College of Engineering, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. He was with the Department of Architecture, University of Kansas, KS, USA as a Visiting Professor in 2014 and 2018. He was a Full Professor at School of Architecture, Soongsil University, Seoul, Korea from Mar 2008 to Jul 2018. Before joining Soongsil, he was with Composite Material and Structure Center at Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow under the supervision of Prof. L.T. Drzal. He received the Ph.D. degree in Environmental Materials Sience from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea in 2007 under the supervision of Prof. H-J. Kim, where he was a member of the Adhesion and Bio-composites Lab.
Prof. Kim’s research group (Building Environment and Materials Lab) focus on Building environment performance, Eco-friendly materials, PCM (Phase change materials), Energy saving materials for buildings and Energy saving technologies in buildings. He has served/serves as an Editor-in-Chief for KSLES (the Society of Living Environment System of Korea), Editorial board for AIK (Architectural Institute of Korea), SAREK (the Society of Air-Conditioning and Refrigerating Engineers of Korea), Director for KOSIE (Korean Society for Indoor Environment), KSES (the Korean Solar Energy Society), KIAEBS (Korean Institute of Architectural Sustainable Environment and Building Systems), the Society of Adhesion & Interface of Korea, KSWST (the Korean Wood Science and Technology), and KACA (Korea Air Cleaning Association). He has been a special issue guest editor of Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, Advances in Materials Science and Engineering and Energies.
He was the recipient/co-recipient of “the Award of Excellence in Leadership of 100 Leading Core Technologies for Korea 2025“ from NAEK (the National Academy of Engineering of Korea) (2017), ”the Best Paper Award“ from KSES (2016), ”the Best Paper Award” from AIK (2016), “50 Excellence Achievement of Basic Research” from MSIT (Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning) (2014), “Sang Hong Choi Young Researcher Award” (2013) from SAREK (The Society of Air-Conditioning and Refrigerating Engineers of Korea), and “Young Scientist Award (The Korean National President’s Award)” from KAST (The Korean Academy of Science and Technology) (2011). Prof. Kim has published over 200 research papers(SCI and domestic) with his graduate students and colleagues.
